Mary begins her process by doing a value study, using one color to lay out the light and dark areas.
A few colors are added to establish depth of field.
Next, she uses a painting technique that layers one color on top of another to achieve a particular hue..
During this process she builds up the painting with bright colors. Each color adds more depth to the painting.
White is used for highlights and balancing tones.
Natural colors and fine details are pulled in near the end...
