“My hope is that when people look at my paintings, an emotional connection is created and it brings joy into their lives.”

Mary Durnin Firth grew up moving around throughout the southwestern United States before settling in the Northwest in Missoula, Montana. She has always loved the outdoors, and spends as much time as possible outside. Recently she has been drawn to capturing the emotions she sees in animals.  Mary is enjoying exploring this through the acrylic medium. She loves color, which is evidenced in her extremely colorful paintings.

For Mary, being creative is a daily necessity. Having been involved in the arts her entire life, she is constantly using her creative side, whether it is in two dimensions with pencil drawings, pen and ink, charcoals, pastels, paints and glass etching or in three dimensions sculpting with fabric, yarn, ceramics, vermiculite, wood, stone or whatever she can get her hands on.  Although she prefers working directly with her hands, she has also made use of many of the advances in technology.

Mary has a love for learning, and is constantly trying to learn something new. She has also enjoyed teaching which has given her a wonderful sense of achievement as she has watched her students go out into the world and start their own companies and inspire her with their creativity.  She has taught Photoshop, HTML, Website Design, as well as 3D modeling and animation at Platt College in San Francisco, California, and the Art Institute of Los Angeles in Santa Monica, California. She has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Montana.
