Painting this image turned out to be a very interesting experience for me. I was much freer with my brush, and I had so much fun with the color in it. I had a specific client in mind during the painting process, and this rhino represents so much of him to me. He is strong yet gentle, full of laughter and life, and generally just fun to be around. However, there is always a bit of mystery hiding in the background, and he can be fierce when the need arises!

When I saw the photograph of this lion, I fell in love with him. I asked Lori if I could paint him, and she was so generous to allow me to do so. I am probably not supposed to have favorites, but this is definitely my favorite painting so far. All of those feelings I felt when I first saw this guy are reflected in the colors and brushstrokes. I continue to fall under his spell.

When my husband, David, took the photograph that I used to paint this picture, the jaguar was keeping watch over her cub. Her protective stance was definitely telling us that she was in charge and would do anything to protect her offspring.

When I see a jaguar, I always think of the way my husband pronounces it, “jag you ahh.” The first time I heard him say it, he was talking about a British Motor’s Jaguar automobile. While painting this, I was thinking a lot about fast cars because, to be honest, I love driving them; I'm a bit of an aggressive driver. The face of this jaguar reminds me of a race car driver, focused, intense, self-assured, the face of a winner.

When I took a photograph of this tiger on my phone, I couldn't believe how well it turned out. I watched him licking his paw and all the while, he was staring right at me. His gaze was so intense that I felt he was looking right through me. I knew right then that I just had to paint him.

“Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.” That is what I always imagine this mama is saying to her baby. I used much softer brush strokes and more blending of the colors in order to convey a sense of love and caring. I feel very safe and protected with her.
